We woke up today with mixed emotions... today was our last day on the island. We were seriously contemplating just cancelling our return flight home but realized we MIGHT :) miss our family so we better return back to Arizona! Today was also Sunny's 27th birthday... man she's getting old! Her sisters were kind enough to call at 5 am Hawaii time to wish her a happy birthday. She didn't mind too much... she enjoyed hearing from family and friends all day today.
We headed out for breakfast and shopping. We know how much Adam loves shopping! At this point in our trip, we had not purchased any souvenirs and we needed SOMETHING besides our 800+ pictures to prove we were actually here! After shopping we had to go back to our hotel to pack up. Ugh!!! Have you ever noticed how much more fun it is to pack to go on your trip than to pack to go home?! When checking out, Adam jokingly asked the hotel hostess if he could fill out a job application for the hotel rather than check out.
We still had a few more stops we wanted to make before our flight. We just HAD to go back to Puka Dogs (see post from a few days ago), wanted to see Spouting Horn and also stop at the botanical garden. A lot of the footage from "Jurassic Park" was shot at the botanical garden. You should see this place... beautiful!
Our final stop was at the Marriott for once last piece of hula pie - macadamia nut ice cream, oreo crust, chocolate, whipped cream and coconut. Sunny couldn't ask for a better birthday cake! We then headed to return our rental car and back to Lihue Airport. 8 days has never flown by so fast... The airport is a little different than back home. The majority of the airport is outdoors and it is very small so we didn't think we'd have too much trouble getting through security... yea, we were wrong. Adam was sent back twice LOL He forgot to take the sunblock out the first time and the second time they found bug spray in his backpack as well. We were able to finally get through by telling them just to throw the stuff out.
One last chance to "miss" our flight. We decided we'd be responsible and head back to the mainland. Flying red eye was not the most fun, but we survived. We weren't able to get any sleep on the plan so you can imagine how we felt when we landed in Phoenix. We'll be sleeping for a few days just to catch up.
It's so hard to sum up in words just how amazing our trip was. Sunny almost went so far as to say it was better than our honeymoon to New York... GASP!! It's hard to compare it to any other place we have been and the pictures don't do it justice. We can't wait to plan our trip back! We are so lucky to have had the opportunity to go and can't wait for our next trip together.
Aloha!!
