We left our hotel in San Diego and headed to the airport where we were picking up Sunny’s grandparents. We were their taxi service to Carlsbad. Just 45 minutes later and a little help from “Maggie” (yes, we have named our gps system LOL) we were at the hotel. The hotel sat right on the beach! Just a mere 50 stairs and we were on the sand. Since we haven’t been beaching since Hawaii which was SOOOO long ago :) we decided to head down there right away. The water is a little different in California. It is freezing and the waves were big enough that we both took a few hits throughout our trip.
One of our plans while we were in Carlsbad was to head over to the USS Midway, a massive aircraft carrier that was taken out of service and docked in the 90's. The ship was enormous. It housed over 4,500 sailors and sailed the ocean blue for several years. We walked around down in the sailor's quarters, the mess hall, the engine room, etc. We appreciated what the servicemen go through to protect our country because the living situation must not have been very comfortable. It was hot, there was limited space, and few scenic views from inside there. We both nearly bumped our heads on the ceiling of the ship many times. We think the ideal height for a sailor must be UNDER 5’8”. One of our favorite parts of the ship was the landing strip. Parked on its surface were several of the planes that flew from the ship. We pretended like we were Maverick and Goose and got up close and personal with a few planes.
This trip was so much fun. We were able to spend time with all of our family. We ate, swam, ate, swam and repeated this same cycle pretty much the entire week! One of our last days in Carlsbad we were able to celebrate Sunny’s Grandma’s birthday. We tease her that she books this trip the same time every year just to get a birthday party out of it. What a wonderful example she is to our entire family. There are so many qualities in her that she has passed on to Sunny and we are so grateful that we get to spend so much time with her. If you think Sunny is feisty… wait until you meet Grandma!!
The end of this trip also marked the end of our summer. Where does the time go?! We can’t complain too much… we have been very fortunate to have been able to go and do so many things these last few months. We LOVE this tradition of a yearly trip with our family and can’t wait to continue as we start a family of our own.
