Day Two - Waimea Canyon - May 28, 2008

We ate breakfast at Hanalima Bakery, a bakery specializing in local fare. We tried the malasadas, which are Portuguese donuts covered in sugar, and thought they were YUMMY! Then we headed south to the Waimea Canyon, which is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The drive was beautiful!!! We are in awe of the beautiful colors (lush vegetation, flowers, clouds, the bright red dirt, the rainbows). It's like we woke up to color television after living in a black and white world. We probably stopped every couple hundred feet to take pictures of the beautiful plant life and
scenic views. We even took a few with us in them :)

We hiked at two different points in the canyon. One trail took us down into the canyon so we could get a better view looking up towards the rim and the other was along the canyon's rim. After hiking 5 or 6 miles and scoping out various views we drove to the top for a view of the entire canyon. Unfortunately, it began to rain and the fog came rolling in. In fact, up near the top, the temperature dropped down into the mid 60's. Not like that's cold or anything but for a couple of Arizonans, that is cold!

After visiting the canyon for most of the day, we headed to Waimea to Jo Jo's shave ice. Oh my gosh!!! We had been waiting to try this stuff and is it ever SO good! We might move here just for the shave ice. Imagine the best snow cone you have ever had with ice cream on the bottom. Need we say more?? We ate it at the pier near a beach that had black sand, which was most likely from previous volcanic activity.

That evening, we decided to dine in style since we ate so poorly the night before. We went to the most delicious teppanyaki grill! Sunny had never been to a teppanyaki grill before so we took some really cool pictures of the flames on the grill. This was Adam's first bite of seafood on the island so he ordered sushi. He tried to convince Sunny to try sushi. She was a trooper and tried it, but decided she'd stick to the steak instead!

We decided to go "Kauaian style" and turned in a little earlier tonight... Back at the hotel by 9. More tomorrow!
