Today was our first official "excursion." We were excited about our day long boat trip up and down the Napali Coast. We booked with Captain Sundown on their 40-foot saling catamaran. They sailed part of the way down the coast and motored out the rest. It was absolutely breath-taking and relaxing!! A day in the sun, the ocean breeze, the water splashing us as we hit waves. It was wonderful. The Napali Coastline is filmed in a lot in movies and is probably one of the most beautiful sites you'll ever see. The ride out wasn't too rigorous. We enjoyed views of the coast from afar, ate pineapple and talked with some of our fellow passengers. Once we had been out two hours or so, we anchored and were able to swim in the ocean and snorkel. There were fish everywhere! As soon as you jumped off the boat, there were swarms of fish which you could literally touch they were so close. We were able to see coral, fish, turtles, and other ocean life. Adam's snorkel mask had a few issues so he probably drank more than his fair share of salt water that day, but it was still fun to snorkel! We got back on the boat and enjoyed our lunch.
Heading back to shore... Now that's another story. On the way back they motor closer to shore so you are able to see the caves and waterfalls up close. Well, today was a really windy day and we were going against the current so you can imagine how the ride back was. Adam says his hand still hurts from Sunny squeezing it so tight. The waves were HUGE and by time we got back to shore we were soaked. We had sand, salt covering us and Sunny has never been so happy to see land! We really enjoyed the tour, but it was a LONG day!!
We wanted to see a few other spots up north before heading home so we also went to Secret Beach and Secret Lava Pools. The beach wasn't quite a secret since there were a ton of other people there but it sure was pretty. You had to hike probably a half mile or so down a "trail" to get there. From the beach we were able to see the light house, which is the most northern tip of Kauai. Once you get to the beach, you hike over lava rock to get the pools. The pools are within the lava rocks... very cool! We saw crabs crawling along the lava rocks and fish that had been washed to shore when the tide was higher. By the time we hiked back up to our car, we were exhausted and ready to relax in the pool right on the ocean!
What an amazing day...Another full day here in paradise!
